HOTEL SACHER HISTORY

Hotel Sacher was initially founded back in 1876 by Eduard Sacher. The hotel wasn’t Eduard’s first business, as he previously opened his first restaurant on Kärntner Straße in 1873, three years before he invested his time into Hotel Sacher. In 1880, he met the love of his life Anna Sacher who he married soon after. Anna became the managing director after Eduard Sacher’s death and she earned recognition and reputation for various reasons. Allegedly, Anna was never seen without her French Bulldogs and a cigar. After World War I, Anna refused to allow guests of non-aristocratic descent to enter the hotel. This lead to financial problems and the hotel received a new ownership after its bankruptcy in 1930.

The hotel founder’s father, Franz Sacher was the inventor of the now world famous Sacher torte, which was created for the Austrian State Chancellor Klemens von Metternich in 1832. This torte has had an immense part in the hotel’s history and it is one of the main reasons why it has received worldwide recognition.
