Get the Anmeldebescheinigung

What is the Anmeldebescheinigung for EWR citizens?

If you’re a citizen of an EU/EWR (European Economic Area) country or Switzerland and you stay in Austria for more than 3 months, you must apply for the Anmeldebescheinigung. In Vienna you need to do this within four months of entering or starting residence.
This certificate proves your right to live in Austria under EU law.

What you need to do

  1. Make sure you have a valid residential address in Vienna (you’ll usually need a Meldezettel).
  2. Book a personal appointment with the correct office (in Vienna: Magistratsabteilung 35 (MA35) — EWR-Referat) depending on your district.
  3. Bring all required documents, such as:
    • Valid passport or ID
    • Proof of address (Meldezettel)
    • Proof you are working or self-employed, or have sufficient means and health insurance if not working
  4. Submit the application. If everything is good, you receive the certificate soon after.
